The Gardening Competition
Recently, our city of Yogyakarta confronted an issue with waste. Our biggest waste shelter has been permanently closed. A lot of people don’t care about the environment and throw waste away into the river and in the main street. Waste is piled up everywhere.
Luckily, during our AVP project about waste management and the environment, we were able to teach our 30 female clients about how important it is to manage household waste wisely by separating inorganic waste and then making compost. This inspired us to initiate a competition of composting and gardening for the women. The goal of the competition is to create a better living environment for their families, plant vegetables for their families to consume, and of course reduce the waste problem for our whole community.
Part of the competition will be making compost and another will be producing plant seeds. Compost and seeds are the most expensive components of farming, so if the women are able to make them themselves, they can organically farm at a very low cost.
The women now have the knowledge and skills they need from our workshops, so the competition has begun. We will select the winner in 10 months.
